This year Culture Shock Dance Troupe held its annual Shock’N The Park event at Horton Plaza Park. This yearly event is an opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate the inclusiveness of dance. Mighty Shock Los Angeles came the farthest to share their talents. The Los Angeles chapter of Culture Shock is celebrating their 25th year and proved that they are going strong. Other guests included Robotix, Fuego Crew from Tijuana, Mexico, Nu Era feat. NuKids, Wild Nation, Major League Crew and Culture Shock Dance Center’s own Shock Army. Not only did Culture Shock, Future Shock, Mighty Shock and Mini Shock perform their own pieces, but came together for a collaborative finale to prove, once again that dance is for everyone!
Following these amazing performances dancers battled it to see who would be named our 2019 Battle winners. Our judges Jahdai “JK” Jackson, Dom “D’Cypher” Haulsey and Charlie “Hybrd” Lopez and had a tough job. During the Battle, mc’d by Jojo Vandereb, youth and adult dancers went through 4 rounds of freestyle dance battle and ultimately Sebastian from Future Shock San Diego and Jose from Fuego Crew came out as our champs.
Between the raffle opportunities, food trucks, the Kipp School, Shock Gear and Robiotix vendors it was a day of camaraderie. But the best part was the hundreds of people who came by to support. As the music filled the plaza, patrons in the downtown area were drawn to event. They paused to observe the scene and stayed to enjoy the performances and dance battle. We are so thankful that our fellow San Diegans joined us and look forward to next year with an even farther outreach of community engagement.
A special thanks goes out to The City of San Diego: Commission for Arts and Culture, California Arts Council, Culture Shock Dance Center, National Charity League Inc., and Horton Plaza Park. See you all next year!!
